Assignment 12 : Bookmarks & Drill Through

Use Case – Working with Bookmark as action

Source – Zoo

Analytics – Create Bookmark

Report/Dashboard – Bookmark as action

Objective – Power BI Desktop, Cloud Service and End to EndWorkflow

1. Try to make a report which has a page for each kind of Image. When you click the image of that creature you will see all the animals of the same type:

To get you started look in the above folder to find the three images used. Note the names of the images. Create a page with a table for each:

When the pages are all created, hide them so that the only way user can reach the page is by clicking the relevant image on the first page.

Don't try and hide all the pages. One must remain visible - otherwise how will they get to the hidden pages!

2. To create the bookmarks make sure you have the bookmark feature turned on in the View tab:

Now choose the first page to create as a bookmark, and choose Add in the Bookmark Pane:

Leave all the other options ticked for the time being. Name the bookmark after the page.

3. Clicking on the turtle should now take you through to the water page we created earlier

4. Adding a back arrow which returns you to the first page of the report. Use the type Back instead of Bookmark when creating the Link.

5. Save & Publish as Zoo

Result – Bookmark with Image action

Solution 12 -

1. Load the data set into Power BI using the Get Data button. Click on Transform data option.

2. In the Nature table, the column headers are missing and it appears that the first row can be used as column headers. Let us go to the Home section and in their select Use First Row as Header in First Row as Header option.

Rename the first column as National Pokedex number by double clicking on the column header and renaming it .

Change the data type of the first column (National Pokedex Column) to Whole number by clicking on the data type button on the left side of the column header as shown below:

Click close and apply and the changes made to the table are applied and the power query window is closed.

When the changes are getting applied an error is popped up as shown below:

As this is error and has missing data in all the columns so let us use Remove errors option in the Remove rows menu.

Now click on close and apply and then the changes will be applied.

3. In the reports view, create a report called Creatures where all the three images are shown. For this, go to Insert menu from the Menu bar and click on Image.

Browse the image and click open.

Repeat this for all the images.

Creatures page is completed which shows images of all three types of Pokemons.

4. Let us create a report for all the Pokemons which have Water as Nature Symbol. For this create another page by clicking on the + sign besides the Creature page.

Name this page as Water. In this create a table with columns - National Pokedex number, English Name, Evolves into, Japanese name.

Now in the Filters section, drag and drop the Nature Symbol field from the fields section into the "Add data fields here" in the "Filters on this page" section and then tick the check box of the Water field.

Select an ImageSimilarly create one page for Grass type and other page for Fire type using the same steps as above but just making a small change on the filter by checking the Grass and Fire checkboxes respectively.

Go to View menu and then click on the Bookmarks and Selection options.

Go to Water page and then in the bookmark section click on Add.

Rename the bookmark created as Water by double clicking on the bookmark name.

Right click on Water bookmark and then click on Update. This bookmark is now saved.

Repeat the above steps for the other two bookmarks as well and name then as Grass and Fire.

Now, let us hide all the pages so that they are not visible in the report and only one page at a time is visible when image for that particular type is clicked on Creatures report. To hide the page, right click on the name of the page and then choose Hide Page.

Now repeat the same for the other two pages, and the final result is as shown below:

For connecting the images to the respective pages, click on the image icon and then turn on Actions and then choose Type as Bookmark and then select the page associated with that image in the bookmark field. Let us first do it for the Water image, so in the bookmark fields in Action select Water.

Repeat the above steps for Grass and Fire images as well.

Now, click on water image while holding the control key and then it will take you to the Water page created. Similarly, test the other images as well to see if they are functioning properly.

In order to go back to the Creature page from the Water page let us create a Back button. To do this, go to Water page then Insert -> Button -> Back.

Position this button as desired and then turn on the Actions and then choose Back in Type.

Repeat the same for creating a Back button on the Grass as well as Fire pages.

Now, click the back button on Water page while holding the control key in order to check if the buttons are functioning properly.

Save this report as Zoo by choosing the Save option from the File menu.

From the Home menu click on Publish to publish the report on Power BI Service.

A dialog box will appear in that you can choose the workspace in which you want to publish the report on Power BI service.

After a few seconds the report will be published on Power BI Service and a dialog box will appear which contains the link to the published report. Click on the published report in order to open the report on Power BI Service. I have made some customisation on the reports by changing the colours used  in the Water, Grass and Fire pages just to make it visually attractive.

In Power BI Service, go to My workspace -> Reports -> Zoo and the report will appear as follows :

Test all the images to see if they are going to the respective pages and also check the Back button to see whether everything is working properly.

The final Water, Grass and Fire pages are as follows :
